What Are PDO Threads?

PDO threads are made of polydioxanone, a polymer used in medical sutures, and are used for non-surgical lifting and tightening of the skin as an alternative to surgery. The PDO sutures are bioabsorbable and dissolve over time, but in their place will be your own collagen and elastin that the threads have stimulated your body to produce. A PDO thread lift procedure can be completed in as little as 15 minutes, with no risk from general anesthesia (only local anesthetic), no high surgical costs, and no lengthy surgical downtime. The results are visible immediately and improve over several months. The results are not permanent but can last for up to two years.

There are three types of PDO threads

  • PDO mono threads are smooth sutures designed to stimulate collagen production and rejuvenate the skin
  • PDO lifting threads contain tiny cogs that lift tissues in the face
  • PDO screw threads have one or two intertwined threads and are best utilized to bring back lost volume where the face has sunken with aging

What Kinds of Procedures Use PDO Threads?

You’ll be pleased to learn that PDO threads, which have actually been around since the 1980s, can be used for a wide variety of facial procedures, including:

  • Lower face lifts
  • Neck lifts
  • Brow lifts
  • Non-surgical nose jobs
  • General collagen encouragement (improve fine lines and deeper lines, such as around the mouth and in the forehead)
  • In addition to lip filler, smooth threads will make the lip borders pop and save your filler for the body of the lips
  • To fill in “Tech Neck” or “Necklace lines”

The result is a more youthful look to fight the signs of aging, without the pain and downtime of facelift surgery.

What Else Should You Know About PDO Threads?

One reason our clients opt for PDO thread lifts is that there are far fewer complications than with facelift surgery when procedures are performed properly and when you follow instructions carefully before and after your appointment. Minor complications, such as bruising or inflammation, can occur, but they are not usually long-lasting and are easily addressed.

The results of PDO thread procedures can last anywhere from six months to years, depending on your age, your skin, and the type of lift you have performed. The younger you are, the longer the results tend to last.

Most of our clients go back to work or their other activities the same day as their procedure. If you have a special event coming up and you need to be sure you aren’t bruised or swollen (like a wedding or reunion), you should schedule your procedure at least 2 weeks in advance of the event.
